ASTC Pro Bono Initiatives:
“People never dreamed that they could have
the level
of
expertise brought to their case that trial consultants offer.”
Timonium, MD -- The American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC) Pro Bono Publico & Awards Committee is furthering its initiatives on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the ASTC Annual Conference in Chicago. Trial lawyers, Ron Betman from Winston & Strawn and Sara Gourley from Sidley & Austin, along with Diana White, Executive Director of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, are participating in the development of ASTC’s pro bono initiatives, with trial consultants, Alison Bennett and Cynthia Cohen. ASTC’s pro bono initiatives have reached local, regional, and national scopes as trial consultants collaborate with law firm pro bono programs, bar associations and legal aid foundations. Trial consultants conduct jury research, assist with graphic presentations and help lawyers with telling the story. Dr. Cynthia Cohen, from Verdict Success in Manhattan Beach, CA says, “There are plenty of opportunities for ASTC members to contribute to our Society. Trial consultants give hundreds of hours to their communities in working for the good of the people. Educating the legal field about our pro bono initiatives and matching the right consultant to the case makes a difference. This past year our Los Angeles team assisted trial lawyers with housing issues as well as conducting a mock trial for a high profile court martial case at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. People never dreamed that they could have the level of expertise brought to their case that trial consultants offer.”
The mission of the ASTC Pro Bono Committee is to: 1) Promote pro bono initiatives with ASTC members, including compiling specific pro bono services each member is willing to provide; and 2) Serve as a resource to established legal aid, bar associations, and law firm pro bono programs matching their needs with ASTC volunteers. Alison Bennett established a Dallas/Fort Worth pro bono team this year.

The American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC) is pleased to announce that on July 1, 2007, Chris Dominic, Senior Consultant and President of Tsongas Litigation Consulting, Inc., will begin his term as President. Before being elected president, Dominic served as a Director of ASTC's Board.
As ASTC celebrates its 26th year, Dominic says he has "great respect for what has been accomplished" in the past, and acknowledges that the organization "has a strong foundation to build upon." Dominic hopes to build on this foundation by focusing on the continued development of the organization's standards and guidelines and by doing more to "educate those outside the organization about what ASTC stands for and what we do." He also says that the organization must "respond effectively to challenges to our profession and its development."
